Puglia, the easternmost region of Italy, bordered to the north-west with Molise, on the west by Campania and Basilicata, is washed by the Adriatic Sea to the east and south west by the Ionian Sea. It is a flat and hilly region, and can be divided into four zones: the promontory of Gargano, the tables, which with its 3,000 square kilometers is the largest plains of central-southern plateau of the Murge, which slopes gently toward the sea, the flat peninsula of Salento. The only modest relief are on the border with Campania, with the Monte Cornacchia (1,152 m), and Gargano, the Bald Mountain (1,056 m). Almost all the land of Apulia is of limestone, and frequent are the phenomena of karst. For these reasons, the water is not keeped on the surface and almost throughout the region lack the rivers and streams, the landscape is so dry and barren, the land is often left out at pasture, as they are intensively cultivated only the low-lying areas and coastal areas. The woods are rare: the best known is the Foresta Umbra, with animals now rare as a deer, marten and weasel. The only rivers are those of Puglia across the table. This explains the diversity of this area. The terrain of the table is not because of limestone but is alluvial, that is formed of debris downstream rivers. These streams, dry for much of the year, tend to widen in swamps before reaching the sea. Malaria is a time to prevent these lands were inhabited and utilized properly, but after rehabilitation of the early decades of this century have been intensely cultivated cereal first, then even a screw, olives, fruits and vegetables. The coasts are very different. Low sandy Ionian, steep and rocky Adriatic side of Salento; uniform treatment of the Murge and table, again high and uneven in much of the Gargano, to go down in the north of this promontory, here are the lakes coastal Lesina and Varano. Puglia also belong to the beautiful Tremiti Islands great tourist attraction. The climate in Apulia is typically Mediterranean, with hot summers and dry. The absolute lack of rainfall and lack of water courses have necessitated the construction at the beginning of this century, the great Aqueduct of Puglia, which distributes through 2700 kilometers of pipelines throughout the region the waters of the Sele, a river Campania
