| METAPONTO AND THE IONIAN COAST |
The Ionian coast of Basilicata extends about 35km from Metaponto in Nova Siri, and is characterized by vast beaches of fine sand and wide beaches of golden yellow sand and pebbles on the coast further south in the direction of the Pollino National Park. In this area in the eighth century. BC, were born the cities of Hellas Megale (Magna Grecia): Metaponto, Heraclea (today Policoro), Siris and Pandosia that hosted people like Pythagoras and that was the scene of terrible battles, such as by Pirro fought against the Romans. The classic signs of aging are visible in the archaeological excavations of Metaponto and Policoro and their important museums. The Ionian coast is accessible by car through the streets of the valley floor of Basento (SS 407), Agri (SS 598), the Sinni (SS 653) to the north of the region are connected to the highway A3 Salerno-Reggio Calabria. The region is also known as "Southern California" for its thriving agricultural sector that has developed here, the plain Metapontino is a land of investment and business interests both in tourism and in the food industry.
