ITALIAN REGIONS

FRIULI Friuli

Friuli Friuli Venezia Giulia occupies a territory varied but not extended:
is one of the smallest regions of Italy. Lies at the northeast corner of the country, in a border area with three foreign nations, Austria and northern Slovenia and Croatia to the east. The dual name refers to two different areas for physical characteristics and historical reasons. Friuli is by far the largest and includes the provinces of Udine and Pordenone, Venezia Giulia stretches south-east, close to the Balkans (the provinces of Gorizia and Trieste).
The mountains belong to the Alps. To the north rise the Carnian Alps: the main peak is Mount Coglians (2,780 m), the two main crossing points, the Carnian and the Passo Monte Croce di Tarvisio and Sella di Camporosso put into communication with Austria. Farther east lies a stretch of the Julian Alps, which for the most part are slovens. The measurements in a slope foothills of the Alps and hills that reach to the plain. Outcrop on the far south-east, on the mainland of Trieste, there is the Karst, a barren plateau-looking, with rare and low vegetation ground limestone, permeable, and the many cracks and holes in the ground (sinkholes) swallow rainwater, digging tunnels and underground caves.
The plain continues the great expanse Padano-Venetian. Here is even more evident than elsewhere, the distinction between high plains, arid and poorly suited to crops, and low plain, fertile and irrigated.
Even the rivers change their course in the passage from one area: the cut, the main river that descends from the Alps and flows into the Adriatic after a distance of 172 km, when it crosses the high plain lose a considerable quantity 'water because of permeable soil, and widens its bed gravel to a width of 3 km; in bassapianura instead incorporates an-ing it normal. The other major rivers in the region are Livenza, which flows along the border with Veneto and the Isonzo, which has spring, top and middle course in Slovenia, and the lower reaches and river mouth in Italy.
The coasts are low and sandy. It is indented in the lagoons of Marano and Grado, now drained, and are opened in the Gulf of Trieste.
The fundamental fact about the climate and rainfall, one of the highest in Italy. Mountain alternate winters and cool summers, coastal plain and mitigating the suffering of the sea, although limited by the shallow water. A typical phenomenon is the bora, a cold northeast wind that sweeps above Trieste, even reaching speeds of 150 kph.
