| MOLISE |
|
Molise is the most "young" of the Italian regions: it was established 1963; first was part of Abruzzo. Its boundaries were established taking into account various things (historical, administrative requirements, etc..): For this reason, its territory is not presented as well-defined geographical unit. Molise is also, after the Valle d'Aosta, the smallest region. It borders Abruzzo, Lazio, Campania, Puglia, overlooking the Adriatic with 38 km of coastline. Apart from the coastal plain, the rest of the territory is occupied by hills and mountains. The highest peaks are in the Matese Massif, on the border with Campania (Monte Miletto, 2.050 m), and Meta mountains on the border with Lazio and Abruzzo. The coast is low, sandy, uniform, interrupted only by the low promontory of Termoli. The Trigno and Biferno are the main rivers. The Fortore flows only partly in Molise, then passes in Puglia. The Volturno was born in Molise, Campania and then enter into flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Rivers of Molise have irregular regime: very little water in summer, many (indeed, too much) in autumn and winter, with often disastrous floods. The climate is Mediterranean coast (mild winters, warm summers) and the continental interior, with cold winters and rainfall maximum in autumn.
