Piedmont is the most western of the Italian regions. As the His name is located "at the foot of the mountains." It is in fact closed on three sides by mountain ranges: south of the Apennines, which divides it from Liguria (and also, for a short stretch, from the Emilia Romagna region), west and north of the western Alps, which mark the border with France and Switzerland. In the Alps are the highest peaks: two above 14,000 m, the Gran Paradiso (4,061 m) and Monte Rosa (4,633 m) and far above the 3,000 m, as Monte Viso (3,841 m), from which comes the Po and Rocciamelone (3,538 m), which for centuries was considered the highest mountain in the Alps Numerous passes: Passes of Jupiter and Cadibona, Apennines; Passi di Tenda, the Magdalene, Monginevro, Mont Cenis, Simplon , in the Alps Inside the large semicircle of mountains, hills and plains alternate. To the north of the Po are the hills of the Canavese ele Turin hills, south hills of Monferrato and the Langhe, covered with vineyards. Along the Po, extends the initial part of the Po Valley is shaped like a horseshoe and widens as it goes toward Lombardy. It is a fertile plain, well watered (rivers and canals), intensively cultivated. The rivers are many. All arise from the Alps and Apennine, and all are tributaries (or subtributaries) Po Among the most important: the Dora Riparia, Dora Baltea the Sesia, Ticino (which for a treated-to marks the border with Lombardy ), the Tanaro, writes it. One large lake: Lake Maggiore, between Piedmont, Lombardy and Switzerland. The climate is continental, in plain and hill: the Apennines in fact prevent the influx of warmer sea winds. Then: cold winters and fairly long, hot summers and relatively short; rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn. Only on the shores of Lake Maggiore is a milder climate, Mediterranean type: merit mitigating action is exerted by the expanse of water of the lake. In the mountains, alpine climate: cold winters with heavy snowfall, cool summers.
