ITALIAN REGIONS

UMBRIA Umbria

Umbria Umbria is one of four Italian regions that have not locked (the others are Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino - Alto Adige).
The chains of the Umbrian Apennines occupy one third of the territory, the highest peak is Mount Vettore (2,476 m) in the Monti Sibillini, on the border with Marche. And the rest is an expanse of hills. Open valleys between the hills and hollows. The longest valley, which runs through the region, is the Tiber valley, traversed by the Tiber River. Farther east is the Valle Umbra, which is the heart of Umbria, the area surrounding some of his most famous centers (such as Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto). Valleys and basins are fertile, rich in pastures and crops, the hillsides are partly cultivated, partly copertidi woods: this is the "Green Umbria", as is traditionally called. Apennines, the landscape changes: the sides of mountains are often dry, and covered with red earth.
There are many rivers. The longest is the Tiber, which (as we saw) runs through the region from north to south, gradually getting various tributaries of the main ones being the Chiascio and the Black. Before flowing into the Tiber, the Black receives the waters of the Velino River, which fell from a high plateau with a jump of 160 m is the famous waterfall of Marmore. (The grand spectacle is visible only on holidays: In other days the waterfall feeds a hydroelectric power plant). There is also a large lake, Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in peninsular Italy, but it is only a few meters deep (3 to 6) with no natural outlets, and its waters flow out through two canals.
Closed between mountains and hills, away from the sea, Umbria has a continental climate (cold winters, warm summers).
