| VALLE D AOSTA |
|
The Valle d'Aosta is the smallest Italian region. It is also the most mountain: a broad valley nestled within the heart of the Western Alps, with high mountains, vast glaciers, beautiful landscapes. To the west, bordering with France's Mont Blanc (4,810 m, the highest peak of Europe) and north-east, on the border with Switzerland, there are the Matterhorn (4,478 m) and Mount Rosa (4,633 m) to the south, on the border with Piedmont, the Gran Paradiso (4,061 m), with its famous national park. Massif du Mont Blanc comes from the river that runs through the valley is Dora Baltea, a tributary of the Po valley on both sides of central opening so many more narrow side valleys, and traversed by rivers brief but rich in water: all, in fact, arise from massive glaciers. The climate is typical of alpine regions: very cold winter with heavy snow, cool in summer.
