ITALIAN REGIONS

VENETO Veneto

The Veneto region occupies a territory that goes from the Eastern Alps south to the Adriatic sea: therefore presents a variety of physical characteristics, although the larger part is the plain. Four neighboring regions: Trentino Alto Adige and Lombardy to the west, EmiliaRomagna to the south, the Friuli Venezia Giulia to the east. To the north, for a short distance, borders with Austria.
The highest mountains are in the north. Here rise the eastern Dolomites, with peaks famous and evocative: the Marmolada glacier (3,343 m) and the Sella Massif (3,152 m), between which runs the Pass Pordoi; Tofane, Monte Cristallo, Antelao, the Three Peaks. Further east extends the upper valley of the Piave, which takes its name Cadore. In these mountains, forested slopes and the tops of towers and pinnacles contribute to the typical landscape of the Dolomites, which exerts a strong attraction for tourists. Below the alpine zone, extending the Venetian Alps, consisting of plateaus and massifs of different configurations: the Monte Grappa, rocky and arid, the Asiago Plateau and the mountains Lessini fertile and wooded and the Monte Baldo, which overlooks Lake Garda. Two groups of volcanic hills interrupt the plains: the mountains and hills Berici Hills. At their feet warm water springs (Abano Terme), as often happens around extinct volcanoes.
The vast plain is similar to that of Piedmont and Lombardy. It can be distinguished in the high plains, rather dry because the water penetrate the soil much deeper, and low plain, which makes the presence of springs irrigated and fertile.
The region is quite rich in watercourses. The Po forms the border with Emilia-Romagna, before widening into a delta much branched. The other rivers run almost parallel to the Po and get-Tano directly in the Adriatic. The main ones are the Adige, the Brenta, Piave. And Venetian entire eastern part of Lake Garda. By the slow action of the rivers depends largely on the shape typical of the Veneto coast: the water erodes the very friable dolomite rocks, carrying debris downstream and deposits them along the coastline. Thus was born the lagoon pools of water dotted with islands and protected by sand cordons (strands) that leave some openings to the sea. Another area where land and water form a unique landscape and the Po delta, the coastal plain of Polesine. The gradual accumulation of land has divided the estuary into different arms and created wetlands and pockets of sea water (valleys) low and full of fish, sometimes buried in order to obtain farmland. These lands have always required human intervention: the reclamation have occurred over time, and so works to strengthen the banks of the river, which flows into the sea with difficulty due to low gradient, favoring flooding.
The climate is continental strip Po, the Adriatic Sea in fact, shallow, limited to the coasts its effect mitigatone. In the mountains of northern winters are very cold and cool summers, as elsewhere in the Alps. Has a mild climate the Riviera del Garda.
