Cavagrande del Cassibile special nature reserve was founded in 1990 for the purpose of preserving natuaral vegetation, and of restoring its Mediterranean forest vegetation as well as defending and increasing the Mediterranean fauna, It lies in an area of about 2.760 hectares, in the comunes of
Avola,
Noto, and
Syracuse. The Protected area includes a stretch about 10Km long of the river
Cassibile, one of the most important rivers in
south-eastern Sicily, with, getting in among the rocks iblei plateau, has produced canyon, over 250 meters deep in some stretches, with steep walls densely covered in vegetation.
