Untitled document The Serenissima Republic of Venice in 1593 has built Palmanova in order to protect the eastern borders of the region from the attack of the Turks, in addition they had to limit the expansionist of the archduchy of Austria. In order to build a war machine like this the Superintendent of Venice General Giulio Savorgnan has conducted a team of architects, engineers and military experts of the Office of fortifications. The result was a star with 9 points, now, it is constituted of three circles of fortifications, the Venetians built two of these and the French built the third circle. This territory was conquered many times and  in the 1866 it became territory of the Kingdom of Italy and was proclaimed a national monument in 1960. An essential element of this territory is the stronghold with his form of nonagon with the bastion at the base, a wide moat further protect the territory at the  which you had access through three gates integrated in three curtains. The Piazza Grande is a hexagonal space with at its centre a plinth in Istria stone from which stands a banner that is symbol of the fortress . In Palmanova there is the Municipal Historical Museum that  is useful to understand the urban structure and the fortress in their historical evolution under the domain: Venetian, Napoleonic, Austrian and Italian.  In the Historical Military Museum there are the uniforms and the relics that have characterized the history of Palmanova from his birth until the second world war.
