Abetone is the most important ski resort in Tuscany. The town lies in a passage that connects the towns of Pistoia and Modena. It is not hard to guess why the name of this place, which is surrounded by dense pine forests, in italian called "abeti".
The ski area is very large and valuable though the mountains do not exceed the Mount Gomito to 1892 meters high.
Exposure to the sun and the cold weather, however, make Abetone in winter very rich of snow wich is usually preserved for a long time. The ski season is in fact available for at least 3 months a year. In the most cold and snow years sometime it's possible to ski until the end of March.
