THE SICILIAN CARTS

An art of the past

The sicilian cart was born in the 18th century and was used until the second half of the 20th century, because afterwards the people used motorized means of transport. Since 1830, the Bourbon government built the regie tazzere, these was paths with  curves, landslides and steep climbs, which permitted the passage of carts; this invention made better the quality of movements. With the passing of the years the production of the sicilian cart has become a real art and it has different styles: the style of Palermo is  characterized by yellow background with a geometric decorations. The themes are religious or chivalric representations and the tonality are  red, blue, green and yellow. The style of Catania is more complex than that of Palermo, his decorations are well-finished, his incisions are refined and his  background is red. The victory style has the red background, the dark shades of color and the cut is instinctive . The woods used are walnut, ash, beech, these are engraved and finished with 200 craft tools. This art is considered belonging to the past but it continues to living thank to the hands of masters like Alfio Pulvirenti and Gregorio Sciortino.
