The dying city

Civita di Bagnoregio is a beautiful medieval village built on a particularly unstable terrain made up of limestone. Born as a result of repeated volcanic eruptions.
The origins of the town date back to the Etruscan period. During this period were made to the buildings channeling the water and its lack of maintenance caused by the fall of the Roman Empire helped to make it even less stable soil, due to infiltration of water.
Several measures have been issued for the Protection of the town, due to numerous landslides that followed one another over time.
In 1695 Civita di Bagnoregio was damaged by a violent earthquake, and the inhabitants of the village were moved into the village of Bagnoregio.
In 1944 the bridge that connected to Civita Bagnoregio was blown by German troops.
Later it was built a new bridge, still in use in reinforced concrete.
As soon as you enter a Civita di Bagnoregio you can admire the fascinating port of Santa Maria, so called because built around a church dedicated to Our Lady.
The structure is of Etruscan origin and is dug out of tufa stone, the exterior is of medieval origin. The sides of the gate there are two lions that celebrate the Victory of Bagnoresi on Monaldeschi.
Inside the village you can admire Colesanti Square, where the homonymous palace. Later heading towards Piazza San Donato meets Palazzo Mazzocchi Alemanni Origin sixteenth.
Opposite the church of San Donato is the Town Hall and to the left you come to the Bishop's Palace built in the square dell'episcopato.
The only festival that is held in Civita di Bagnoregio is the feast of Tonna, a donkey race around a circular fence.
This festival is held twice a year, the first Sunday of June and mid September.
Civita di Bagnoregio un'ambita is still a tourist destination, due to the proximity to major cities of central Italy such as Orvieto, Viterbo, Bolsena, Perugia, Siena, Assisi.
