VENETIA AND THE LAGOON
The Lagoon of Venice or the Venetian Lagoon is a lagoon in the northern Adriatic Sea along the coasts of the Veneto.
The surface of the lagoon is about 550 km ², of which 8% are occupied by land (Venice itself and the many smaller islands). About 11% is composed of permanent water, or dredged channels, while approximately 80% are muddy tidal flats, salt marshes or artificial reclaimed.
In north-central area of the lagoon lies the city of Venice, 4 km from the mainland and 2 from the open sea. The city lies on the immediate mainland also widely conurbation with the Mestre-Marghera-Favaro Veneto.
At the south lies the town of Chioggia instead, while the eastern end of the small towns included in the municipality of Cavallino-Treporti.
Other smaller towns but certainly very fascinating are the inhabited islands of the lagoon are the shoreline of Lido, Murano, Pellestrina, Burano, Sant'Erasmo Mazzorbo the Vignole, Torcello, Mazzorbetto and San Clemente. In San Giorgio Maggiore, San Lazzaro degli Armeni, San Michele and San Francesco del Deserto, host convents, there are respectively 11, 22, 11 and 9 residents.
